I would have died of Hunger if Ram Gopal Verma wasn’t there: Manoj Bajpayee

Mumbai ka don kaun? Bheekhu Maatre.” When I delivered this famous dialogue in movie Satya (1998), I believed that it will change my life forever.  People will say – ‘what a hero he is.’ Directors will queue up outside my house to sign me for their movies. As expected, the film was a huge hit and many magazines and newspapers praised my work.

However, neither did anyone called me a Hero, nor any director visited my home. I was sitting idle at my home. I was shocked to know that I gave my everything to the character; what else I should do? That was the time when Ram Gopal Verma came with the movies ‘Shool’ and ‘Kaun’. Thanks to these movies I was able to bring food to my home. I started to feel that Hindi films are not for me.

During that period, people like Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee entered the industry. I started to blossom like a lotus flower. In between I also did some worthless roles because I had to meet my expenses. Nevertheless, I kept my craziness alive, with these roles, which had brought me Delhi from Bihar.
I was very young when this virus of acting entered me. I didn’t get the admission in Nation School of Drama (NSD). Then, I started taking acting lessons from the NSD students. Trust me! I have kept the same craziness for acting alive in me. If anything, I have become crazier. But, one thing has certainly changed in me that nowadays I have been able to come out of my character sooner now as in earlier days I would be glued to a character for months.
